Annoying Pop-Up Messages

I am running Windows XP. I am also using AOL Instant
Messenger. Anytime I am logged on, I periodically
receive pop-up windows. The message displayed is always
a notice about something...unsafe user, print cartridges
needed, etc. They tell me to go to a site (with the web
address listed therein) to either resolve or eliminate
the windows. The end result is they are trying to sell
me a product to stop these messages.

Here is an example...

etc....

HOW CAN I ELIMINATE THESE ONCE AND FOR ALL WITHOUT BUYING
SOMETHING?

HELP ME!
