I googled and figured out how to disable this, but I am so mad about
this dumb feature. I use my laptop in many public places, meetings,
hotels and this is the dumbest feature I have ever seen. Is there any
beneficial purpose to it? I dont uderstand how such an annoying and
useless feature is in XP?

Uh... Windows has had startup and shutdown sounds for the past decade,
at least. You're just discovering it now?

Where have you been the past dozen or so years? It's been the default on
every version of Windows that has been released!

So what? Only in the last year or two have I had a laptop I carry
everywhere for work, so that is why it's annoyance has multiplied.

That's simply amazing! Here is how to correct it. Open help (just Press
F1) and type in personalize as the search term. Click the link and fix it.

What is annoying is that it will play even if you have the sound turned off
on the PC. The solution is here: Start --> Settings --> Control Panels then
select the Control Panel "Sounds and Audio Devices", then the "Sounds" tab
and work from there.

My laptop has a switch to turn the sound off. Check the manual.
