I have Windows Vista Ultimate on a new Alienware computer, Intel Core 2 Quad
CPU @ 2.40GHz and noticed a very loud almost chirping sound, similar to a
cricket whenever the computer power is placed in sleep mode. Does anyone know
how to remedy?

I read the other post about Mathematica but that's not installed. I also
checked "sound" in Control Panel and found nothing unusual.

This sounds like a hardware fault. Switched mode power supplies - like
those in PCs - sometimes make that noise.

Take the cover off the case and see if you can locate it.
