Annoying freeze problem

I can be typing along, no matter in what venus, i.e. notepad, mirc,
etc and suddenly my typing does not show for like 10 seconds. Its like
windows freezes, but then when the 10 seconds are up... its ok again.
What would make it freeze up like that.. I have turned off my
antivirus, and anything else I can think of that may run.. but this
just started a couple of months ago..... TIA
