which is best FREE anti virus for XP SP2.
I was using AVG 7.5 free but it slows down the system and starting of
programs. Also causing problems to registry (that's what I believe).

AVG or Avast, what you believe and what is actually going on are 2 different
things, why would you make this assumption?

Neither..

Ad-Aware has grown too much and Spybot S&D doesn't appear to like some
machines.

Use Windows Defender (requires no user intervention), WinPatrol (will warn
of anything trying to sneak into startup and enable you to stop it), and
Malwarebytes (the best spyware removal tool presently)..

AVG 7.5 has been upgraded to AVG 8.0; check Grisoft's site.
Or, install Avast free 4 Home

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Avast Anti-Virus is XP and Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions),
FREE, auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any
one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

Avira AntiVirŪ Personal - FREE Antivirus
http://www.free-av.com/
(The free version won't scan your emails.)

Why You Don't Need Your Anti-Virus Program to Scan Your E-Mail
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm
Ensure your e-mail program is configured to display e-mail messages in
'Plain Text' only.
You may wish to consider removing the 'AntiVir Nagscreen'
http://www.elitekiller.com/files/dis...ntivir_nag.htm

Routinely practice Safe-Hex.
http://www.claymania.com/safe-hex.html
Hundreds Click on 'Click Here to Get Infected' Ad
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2132447,00.asp
And ensure your e-mail program is configured to display e-mail messages in
'Plain Text' only.

Good luck

AVG 8, the newest and best AVG will not install in Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000. It will
also not install in Windows XP SP1 (you have to have SP2 or higher). This is because Microsoft no
longer supports these versions with security updates and Grisoft can't assure you of protection.

AVG 7.5 will not be supported after December 31st and hence becomes unreliable.
