I am working on a presentation in PP 2000 with action buttons to advance the
slides back and forth. For some reason, when I go back a slide then forward
again, the animation does not play. I have to end the show and restart the
slide show to see the animation again. How do I get the animation to play
everytime I'm on that slide?

When using action buttons, ppt will remember that you have played the slide
before and will not repeat the animation again.
To fix this, add an additional slide with no animation before the one with
animation. Go to Slide Show > Slide transition. Tick the "Automatically
After".
If your link in the action button is Next, it should link to the additional
slide now.
