I have read the posts and unfortunately, it does not apply to my problem.
Every time I run a scan, i.e Norton, ad-aware or any type of spyware removal
program, as soon as it hits c:docandsettings\owner\localsettings\application
data\microsoft\messenger ( whatever is in this folder it always
changes--there is also shared pix in there) it says (whatever program is
scanning) that is has encountered a problem and needs to close, please note
that when I use the "search for a file button" with hidden files for the
word 'messenger', windows explorer is giving me this error message also. I
paid Norton to hijack my computer since I thought I had a virus(this happened
when I tried to upgrade to 2007) but nothing there. It seems it has to do
with microsoft XP or some sort of corrupted file. I did evevtvwr.msc but it
only goes back so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even a tech at
my house was not able to help me.

Well Isabelle, it could be a hardware, software or infection, try to run the
hijackThis and send the Log to one of many forums for analysis.
While you are waiting for reply try to scan in safe mode and see if you can
get the last ten days in the event viewer log.
Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of
many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30,
http://castlecops.com/forum67.html,
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, or other appropriate
forums for expert analysis, not here.
HTH.
Let us know.
Regards,
nass
