i have a perfectly working laser printer which I bought in 1990! It
works perfectly EXCEPT it has started to output a vertical line down
every page in the same space. Though this printer operates perfectly
in every other respect, I'm reluctant to spend minimum $100 to have it
repaired. I've tried cleaning the rollers but that doesn't seem to
help. This is not just a straight line. don't know how to describe
it. I could scan it.

any ideas, given that inadequate description?

Have you replaced the toner cartridge? That could be a scratch on the
drum. It should take the same toner as an HP IIP, I think.

If it is the printer that I think it is, when you lift the lid you will see
some thin wires at an angle around the middle of the printer. There will be
a horizontal wire running below these across the width of the printer. It
would be worth cleaning these as they could give the kind of problem that
you are having.

Dirt on the corona wires costs nothing to sort, however I agree that
replacing the toner cartridge is probably the most likely solution, though.

The LPB4 won't have any corona wires, just the transfer roller. You may be
thinking of the LPB-8 which is the LaserJet II look alike, the CX engine. The
LPB-4 is the LX engine.

Is it a Black line or a White Strip? Have you tried a new or old
toner cartridge. Most of these kinds of problems are caused by a
srcach on the optical durm of the toner cartridge, or in the case of a
white line a forgen object in the way of the laser.

Thw fuser is in the front door. It's in the center, and covered with a black
fuzz. After the printer's been on a while, it'll be plenty warm too.
