Recently purchased a Sony HC-40 camcorder, where one of my first objectives
is to take selected analog video and use the HC-40 to convert to digital
video and bring into MovieMaker.

I can get the Analog video to record on DV on HC-40, and I can get the HC-40
to pass video into MovieMaker on my Dell/XP desktop, BUT I cannot seem to get
the analog to pass through the HC-40 directly into MovieMaker. The Sony
documentation indicates that there is way to do this, but looking for
information on how to REALLY make it happen.

If it's the 'pass-thru' feature you're using, check the info on the Setup >
MM2.1 page of my site.

Hello,

Set DV camera to VCR mode, Ensure that option AV -> DV is active. Remove
tape from DV camera. Pluf Analog into DV camera. Plug Audio from Analog
into the Line-In socket of sound card,.....start recording with movie
maker...start playback of analog

I am having the same problem with a recently purchaser HC30 Sony Camera. It
will passthrough the digital signal from my old Hi8 but when I try to capture
the signal from mm2 I can see my Hi8 pix in the preview frame but when I
click to manually capture the digital signal, the program rewinds my camera
and plays the tape that is in the camera cutting out my Hi8 signal. When I
remove the tape from the HC-30, the MM2 gives me an error message (when I try
to capture) that says there is no tape in the camera and I can't seem to
overide the MM2 controlling the HC-30 thus I can't get the passthrou signal.
it insist on playing a tape in the HC-30 What gives???

The pass-thru feature was added to MM2.1 - if you have MM2 it won't work.

I've got 2 hour VHS tapes to convert. It looks to me like a single DVD can
handle an hour. While maintaining quality, is there any set up changes I
can make to get 2 hours on a single DVD? Also, is there any way to clean up
or boost the audio during the pass through conversion process?

Hello,

Its a bit odd. There are some who insist it will not work with
MM2.....this kind of remark is probably made by some who cannot themselves
do it....so not a surprise.....the video on my web page called Alton Towers
was captured from an analog camera vie my DV using passthrough...perhaps I
know something these others do not...OR perhaps there is a software failure
they are not capable of fixing...who knows?? What I do know is that there
are many examples pre SP2 of people being told how to do it and them
reporting success....strange thing that.

Anyway, "IF" you are not using MM2.1 then installing SP2 would probably
resolve your problem but take note, there are some who still cannot do
passthrough AFTER installing SP2 and therefore MM2.1

..... Microsoft released a utility to help those using MM2.0 to do pass thru.
There's a link to download it on my Problem Solving > Checklist page....
it's in the section about MM2 Limitations.

Yes you can achieve that by using a dedicated encoder (AVI to MPEG2
converter) such as TMPGenc or ProCoder or Cinema Craft Encoder (CCE). Using
those you need to specify a VBR encoding method with average bitrate of
4.8Mbps. Use this calculator to do your own calculations....

Yes you can using any of the above mentioned software.
