From "Wikipedia:"
"Yamato, named after the ancient Japanese Yamato Province, was a
battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy, and was the lead ship of her
class. She and her sister ship Musashi were the largest, heaviest
battleships ever constructed, weighing 65,027 tons and armed with nine
46 cm (18.1 inch) main guns. ...
"Yamato was a province of Japan. It covered the part of Honshu that is
present-day Nara Prefecture. Since the Imperial court rose into power
there, Yamato came to mean the whole of Japan and in that sense is
referred to as "Great Yamato".
So it would be more like the battleship "Kremlin" or "Washington D.C."
rather than a person's name.
