Its time I installed SP3, but have put it off because I'm still looking for
the answer to my final question.

Some time ago, I read that if you have an AMD processor, there could be
trouble when installing SP3. In that same article, the possible 'trouble'
was not identified, nor were there any instructions I should take care of
(in regard to the AMD processor) before I install SP3.

Is there a specific answer for this? Here are my specs:
AMD Athlon XP 3000+
2.09 GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM

In Device Manager, the manufacturer is Advanced Micro Devices, located on
Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System.

The driver details read: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\amdk7.sys

My computer operating system reads:
5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

Details tab: ACPI\AUTHENTICAMD_-_X86_FAMILY_6_MODEL_10\_0

It started to look good when I first started to read. I have a custom built
Computer (not OEM-HP); but now see that there is a possible video driver
problem (from personal experience, I know about that driver problem- have
been blaming it on trojans, but never could find them - have been having
that problem since rebuild with new ASUS motherboard and the ATI Catalyst
driver and nVidia driver (graphics board). Have already decided last month I
probably should replace the very old display adapter.

Actually, as I'm reading your suggested material, it was the Jesper article
that I first heard about the problem of AMD and SP3, but it would have been
at the very beginning of the discovery of trouble and before the
investigation set in. Later, I apparently was not aware that people were
really working on the problem, and never saw any later notes about it.

But I'm glad I asked the question one more time - it looks like I'm not a
candidate for installing SP3 (the motherboard, the display adapter, the
driver). I'll just keep up my backups and wait for "the really big one"
(crash) - then new hardware and hope Windows 7 is ready by then.

My wife has an AMD chip but not HP machine too. I lamented a week over
it with her PC, and simply got a copy of Acronis True Image Home and
made 2 full images of her drive on a spare USB external drive. Tested
them and then turned off the AV software and firewall and run SP3.
You know, I have no issues. But I was well prepared in case it went
belly up.

Just a thought.

Why would you be running the ATI Catalyst driver if you have an nVidia video
card, or did I misunderstand something there?

But it doesn't seem to affect all HP's with AMD's. I had a Presario SR1124NX
with an AMD that installed SP3 just fine, but my SO's 1 year newer Presario
took a dump when I tried to do it. Fortunately I was able to boot into safe
mode and remove SP3 in add/remove programs. I haven't bothered to try since
then, and since everything is working well on hers, I don't think I will
until it's absolutely necessary. By then, she'll probably be ready for a new
PC anyhow.

I saw it; I was just giving an example. Strange that both HP PC's that I
dealt with had Asus MB's, but one went smoothly and one not at all. And the
MB's weren't that far apart (model-wise), and had the same chipset. Things
that make ya go huh!

5tulips here: I don't know. I'm just the user here. I had an idea I was
running on plain vga for awhile. I had a tech come to fix another problem
and he is the one who added the ATI Catalyst driver and control panel (very
old display adapter is ATI RADEON 7200 series), but he didn't talk about a
problem. I just went to take a look at my build's log of installations. The
nVidia wasn't a video card. It was a sound card. Like Forrest Gump, "That's
all I can tell you about that."

Sure wish I had seen that article......I'm presently still trying to
"install" amdk7.sys. - and I keep running into one more reason I can not do
just that.. sm bus controller, down. can't read any of my cf memory
cards.....did I mention, I take pics for a living and A few of my cards are
full and I get futher backed up.....You did the right thing!
