San Diego (CA) - AMD scored a major win against Intel during the
back-to-school season. According to Current Analysis, AMD outsold Intel
for the very first time in US retail over the period of a whole month.
More than half of all computer systems US stores sold during September
carried an AMD processor.

I wonder how they managed to get away with that. Usually there are hard
quotas placed on the number of AMD systems on retail shelves by
somebody. :-)

Funny how my local BestBuy now suddenly has AMD systems in stock and on
shelves, hmmmmm the AMD lawsuit effect?

And the fact that AMD's fabulous sales results that made its stock price
plunge can heavily be attributed to Turion sales this quarter. Last
quarter it was Opterons sales, this quarter it was Turion sales.

Of course, this excludes Intel-only Dell. Overall, Intel still
out-sold AMD.

Yes this "win" was for desktop retail sales only, which excludes mail-order
and notebooks. That sector was also dominated by "Media Center OS" systems
so excludes most business use systems; in fact the surge was attributed to
back to school purchasing.

I've never heard of Current Analysis before but it seems that they
specialize in "Competitive Response solutions" so it wouldn't be
unreasonable to assume that they'd been commisioned by AMD to stand sentry
over industry sales numbers by sector, waiting for the right moment to
pounce.:-)
