Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is announcing a speed boost for its high-end
chips for server systems and computer workstations.
The Sunnyvale, Calif., company today is introducing three new
"dual-core" chips, a term that refers to incorporating the core
circuitry for two microprocessors on a single piece of silicon.
AMD's new Opteron models operate at a frequency of 2.4 gigahertz, up
from 2.2 gigahertz on earlier models.
AMD's server chips have been gaining popularity, in part because AMD
added dual-core technology ahead of rival Intel Corp., whose dual-core
Xeon chips are scheduled for the second half of this year. Dell Inc.,
which exclusively uses Intel chips, today is announcing servers using
the dual-core Xeons, stating they are expected to become available in
mid-October.
