I can not retrieve my messages remotely from the Verizon site, because some
setting in outlook is set to send all messages to outlook, even if the
program is not open. How can I change Outlook to only get messages when I ask
it to. Thanks in advance.

You mean you want to leave the messages on the server as well?
In your accounts settings-> More Settings-> tab Advanced-> Leave copy on
server

>>because some setting in outlook is set to send all messages to outlook,
>>even if the
>> program is not open

That is impossible. Where would Outlook get the message from then if it is
not on the server?

Outlook cannot get messages unless it is running, so what you say doesn't
ring true.

If you want to have to click Send/Receive in order to get messages, disable
the send/receive interval in your Send/Receive Group dialogue. While
viewing your Inbox, press Alt-CTRL-S to open that dialogue.
