Alternatives to WMM for video capture from device

Hope someone can help. I have another couple of threads out there related to
this issue.

WMM crashes every time I click "capture video from device." After a 3 calls
and a couple of hours on the phone, all eMachines recommends is to reload
system disks, but I really don't want to back everything up. Is there any
other way in Windows to capture video and then just import it to WMM?

Thanks very much,

-Mike

Just to be clear I am assuming you are trying to capture video in real
time and not trying to download a previously taken video.

Correct. I haven't even had a chance to connect a device. I just click
"Capture video" under Step 1 and WMM immediately tells me it has to close. I
have tried it with an without a device connected and get the same crash every
time.

Very frustrating. Any thoughts on a fix or workaround?

Thanks very much for your help,

-Mike

What type of device?
What type of connection?
More details required
If you are trying to import video footage via non-encoding
external USB convertor - bad idea.

Decoder-

Thanks for your reply. The device I'm using is a digital Sony camcorder,
but that's not really the issue. This is my first time trying WMM and as far
as I know it has never worked correctly. When I go to Step 1 and click the
"Capture video from device" link WMM freezes and tells me it has to close.
Makes no difference whether a device is hooked up or not; it has happened on
100% of my attempts. When a device is hooked up it's a USB connection. I
understand now that firewire is the only way to go, but the connection type
seems to make no difference.

The computer is a 3 month old eMachine. All eMachines says is to reload my
system disks - not a good solution since it involves considerable backups.

Thanks again for your time and your help,

-Mike

The USB connection cannot be controlled by WMM.
The USB connection should only be used to transfer
still images from the cam's memory card via dedicated
supplied software.
The connection for capture should be Firewire/1394
Your cam must be set up correctly.
To capture "live" footage just might be too demanding a task
for your PC?
Connect DV Cam via Firewire
Switch cam on. - Playback mode
Windows should detect new hardware/device
Do you receive the on-screen prompt asking you what
action you want to take?

Thanks for your reply. I'll try a firewire connection prior to either
opening WMM or clicking the Capture link, but I'm thinking I probably have a
situation where WMM is corrupt. I'll let you know how it works out.

Thanks again,

-Mike

Just a brief note to let you know you were right. Once I connected by
firewire everything worked seamlessly. Thanks very much for your help, and
I'm sorry to be so dense.
