Alternative to "repair install"

I'm trying to get a Win98 machine networked to an XP Pro machine, and
can't get it to work.

The current roadblock appears to be that on the XP Pro machine, in the
"Home Network Properties" window, the checkbox associated with the
"File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" entry has the
checkmark, but is also "greyed".

If I select that entry and hit the "Install" button, up pops a "Select
Network Component Type" window, with "Client", "Service", and
"Protocol" entries (this is probably no surprise to most reading this
post ;-) ).

If I then select *any* of Client, Service or Protocol and then "Add",
I then get a message to the effect of "Unable to find any drivers for
this device. Have a disk?"

Is there a way to get the drivers without doing something like a
"repair install"?

From what I've read there should be a patch at the MS update site. Use the short cut in teh start menu if your menu is in classic mode. If not open internet and click on tools then select update, should redirect you to MS website, let it search your computer for needed updates, if any, download and install.
