I am using Maxcrypt at the momemt for encrypting my file system.
is there any cool alternative for it?

I like Axcrypt. Open source freeware, powerful encryption but small,
light and easy to use.

that was excellent ... but probably i want somehting with a user interface
where i will be able to add files/folders and by logging to the program and
then clicking buttons i should be able to encrypt / decrpt rather than
encrpt and decrpt every time ...

If really interested in encryption, go for PGP (Pretty Good Privacy).

Is Private Disk Lite Freeware or Shareware?

The bigger brother Private Disk is clearly shareware. But It is hard to
tell whether the Lite edition is Freeware..

I see what you mean from the site but it downloads and installs without
restriction. I have even had support for an earlier version 1.12 which I
could use to blue screen XP. [Create a new virtual disk, Format with NTFS
and compress the virtual disk, Open virtual disk using one XP login, use
fast users switching to switch to another user, close down the system - all
of these steps were necessary, I stopped using file compression].

The Internet Explorer Title bar does however say "DEKART | Freeware
encryption software" so it must be true!
