Not an answer to your question I'm afraid, but just for info, most people in
here steer clear of merged cells like the plague - they tend to cause far more
problems than they ever seem to cure. Copying and pasting can become a
nightmare when they are involved, and as you have found, they tend to screw up
nice answers that will usually get you out of a fix, such as the formatting
option you mention.
