That group was NEVER created here. It was created before anyone here
knew it was there. Please site the control message making it our chat
room.

It exists on individual.net, one of the largest (and IMHO one of the
best-managed) Usenet servers in the world.

<pet-peeve>
Calling a newsgroup a "chat room" is like calling adware "freeware".
</pet-peeve>

Control messages can be found in the ISC archives. For the group in
question, see
<ftp://ftp.isc.org/usenet/control/alt/alt.comp.freeware.discussion.gz>.

Nothing there says that that group is *our* discussion group.

In a previous thread someone said newbies should be told that
acf.discussion was not the best place to ask for advice - labeling it
the "chat room" is an attempt to do that. Do you have a better suggestion.

I see the same people posting in both acf and acf.discussion. I'm not
sure what your point is.

Nothing there says it isn't, either. (puts on old-sysadmin hat)
Newsgroups take on lives of their own, which rarely correspond to what
their original charters say. Since the original charter for
alt.comp.freeware.discussion doesn't say *anything*, it's easy to
re-allocate it as either a discussion group about freeware or a
discussion group for a.c.freeware posters. Take your pick; I'll bow out
of this thread now...

No... (But it still rubs me the wrong way. <sigh>)

Refresh my memory, were there ever "newbies" unsure of where to
post? I will address your better suggestion request below.

Then ACFD is superfluous. Boomer started this years ago. She
routinely pushed discussions into that group rather than reply here.

If you want an acf "chat" room, then properly request a new sub-group
here. I won't object.

I think we both object to ACFPricelessware being a group. ACF
business should only be discussed in ACF. Never in some subgroup.
They can discuss their own business. ACFG doesn't discuss ACF
business, nor should ACFD.

Finish with a quote from nead

"Why would I want to monitor two freeware groups? I tried for awhile
with alt.comp.freeware.discussion ...YAWN. It's not like it's a
trendy Freeware Restaurant that needs to open a "Freeware II" location
across town. Damn.
Sorry not a good analogy, as restaurants are not free...maybe a trendy
Soup Kitchen? Yeah, that's it!

Anyway - alt.comp.freeware is all I need. Any others?"

There was a recent discussion about all this (spread across several
different threads). The information post attempts to deal with
"perceived" reality. Google shows the four acf newsgroups listed in the
post as being related. See:

http://www.google.ca/groups?safe=ima...&num=100&hl=en

Some web sites display alt.comp.freeware posts as if they are being
posted to a web forum hosted by that site - replies in the "forum" are
posted here. See:

Google for your name or mine if you want to see more web forums that
carry acf posts. . .
