I have been reading some post of people having to
constantly restart DNS to get it to resolve. I am having
the same problem, but could not determine if the posters
every solved their problem.

I'm running W2K SP4, with a internal DNS server for AD.
My DNS has forwards set for all external IPs.

Thanks for any help you can give.

have this suffix in the Connection specific suffix?
This will certainly cause DNS to fail if you have numerous machines trying
to register in a zone for this name. Win2kSP4 will not register in single
label names, If there are any machines pre SP4 DNS will forward these
registration requests to the root servers.
Remove these suffixes.

In addition to Kevin's response, how many forwarders do you have?
Maybe one of them does not allow forwarding.

Here's something I just posted today for someone else:

As before, DNSLint showed no response for TCP 53 nor UDP 53 - from either
forwarders nor from our ISP's name servers. But after a quick tweak to the
settings on our main (original) DNS (removed a bogus extraneous DNS server I
had added at the end of the list for this very purpose), suddenly both DNS
forwarders were able to resolve names. Very strange.

Maybe the bogus forwarder was causing the problem. The way the forwarders
work is similar to the DNS client resolver service when there are multiples
in the list, if the first one won't answer, then it removes it from
consideration from the eligible resolvers list, then goes to the next in the
list. If that doesn't answer, it goes on down the list till the bottom one.
It will not start over again unless you restart the DNS service.

Keep in mind some DNS servers have the RA (recursion available) bit turned
off which means it will not answer forwarded queries. Some ISPs do that.

That's one of the many tools. DIG is another one. William Stacey created a
Windows version called NetDIG. You can search back the past week or so for
his post to read up on the conversations taking place about it.
