Alps Pointing-device is preventing the machine from entering standby

I have bought a SONY VAIO PCG-TR2 notebook with winXP Home and upgraded it
to WinXP Professional. I think that that was still all-right (except the
camera not working - I worked that out). However, at some point (maybe after
installing some of other programs or updates) the standby and hibernate
stopped working with the following message:

"The device driver for the 'Alps Pointing-device' device is preventing the
machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again.
If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

I have tried to update the driver with several versions of that driver found
on the internet, uninstalling it, reinsalling it etc. and nothing helped. I
would really need this to work as I'm going to be travelling soon and can't
be shutting down the computer after every short use.

PLEASE HELP!!

Marek
