Just recently had my first crash with Win XP (two good years). When I tried
to reinstall the software from the ATI CD that came with the AIW 8500 card,
my system nearly stops completely whenever the ATISETUP.EXE in the root
directory or the SETUP.EXE file in the install directory are run. This was
determined by looking at the CPU usage using the Taskmanager. It tells me
that the CPU is being used 100% of the time. On another computer in the
house using the same motherboard (different peripherals) it runs OK.????? I
have now downloaded many different driver sets from ATI and the accompanying
MMC, DVD Player, Capture etc. I must have at least a dozen emails from
myself to ATI Support with all the polite replies but still have not been
able to get a complete set of support software and applications for the card
up and running. I have also updated the motherboard BIOS and chipset
drivers. I have installed the latest Windows Multi Media 9 software as
recommended by ATI. All of this was done after a clean reinstall of Win XP
without much other software yet installed.
ATI has yet to even mention anything regarding my very first question, i.e.
the fact that the computer comes to a near halt when attempting to install
the original ATI software that came with the 8500 card. I was quite happy
with the original softwaret.
I am beginning to feel that I could have some sort of subtle hardware
problem, however, everything else f unctions fine including all the software
installed in the last week or so.
If anyone has experienced a similar problem I would like to at least hear
about it whether or not you had any good results.
Thanks,
JimB

I

SNIP!

Have you tried a reformat/reinstall using just the motherboard, memory hard
disk and the card itself? Having just spent many hours with a flaky system
(see my post below "Really weird problem") I found that one PCI card was the
cause of my problem depite the fact that it seemed to run fine in exactly
the same system with a previous installation using the same OS! It was only
when I started with the minimal setup described above, then added cards and
peripherals one at a time that I was able to isolate the problem.

Good luck

Tony
