All USB ports are not working

Hi all,

All of my USB ports stopped working after my son used the computer.
Naturally he "didn't do anything". In the device manager all USB ports show
as "working" but no matter what I plug in, Windows doesn't seem to notice
that anything is plugged in. I reinstalled the drivers which didn't help. I
verified that USB is enabled in the BIOS.

Does anybody have an idea what is going on?

Some overloads will cause USB devices to either not be detected
or you'll get a repetitive message about a "USB device has malfunctioned".
If the USB controllers/hubs are properly shown, power off the PC for
15-minutes and remove the power cord. As strange as this advice sounds
it will sometimes bring the USB sub-system back on line.
It also would help to unplug all USB peripherals before powering down.

Thanks, turning it off for 15 minutes worked great. I guess strange sounding
advice is sometime really good advice.

If your motherboard uses an ICH5 southbridge, which is
in the Intel 865 or 875 chipset, the ICH5 USB controller may
have been damaged by a static discharge. The ICH5 is prone
to this. If this happened, the only solution is to install a USB2
PCI card.
