all of a sudden, network password required?

I have a 2 computer LAN and it's been working fine, with no problem
accessing either computer from the other and moving files around. There are
no passwords required for access.

Today I had a corruption on one computer's C: drive and had to boot up to
another Win2000 installation on the E: drive. Networking is functioning in
the sense that the internet works on both computers(via a router), but when
I try to access folders in #1 computer from #2 computer via My Network
Places, a window pops up requiring a network password, with two lines to be
filled, Connect As and Password. I'm stumped here since there is no
password that I know of. How can I troubleshoot this.

If I try the same type of access from #1 to #2, I get a message that says
"the password of this user has expired". But this particular user name has
administrator priviledges and also "password never expires" checked.

What to do? I'd appreciate some suggestions.

John

Sounds like you don't have matching username/password combos installed
on all installations. Make them match or set up new matching ones and
you should be home free.

Well, like I said, I didn't have or use passwords and I've been using this
network for a year or two without network passwords. What fixed the problem
was rebooting both computers...but I'd sure like to know what was happening
there for that short moment.

check your shares and access control lists (cacls)
also if you don't have to input passwords it either means
the guest account or everyone (ACE) is allowed to login or
you have defined extra accounts that have blank passwords as well.

also check if simple file sharing is disabled, while handy for quick
sharing eg c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents
it disables the security tab in the properties field of files, folders,
drives, ... Eg if you disable simple file sharing you'll get to see a
nice visual presentation of the ACE's like the third picture on this
howto site

http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/F...s/win2kxp.html

** Usually you'll have to take ownership of the files first
because the partitions weren't created by the running windows install
(eg if you want to share stuff on your broken windows install, or one of
its partitions)

**PS: i don't know if this is true for win2k machines

i'll hope i didn't misinterpreted your question,

greetings
