I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit and all of a sudden, when I boot there
is no sound at all. The speaker icon has a red-X on it and the tool-tip
says: "audio services not running".

Looking at the services, I see that the Multimedia Class Scheduler
(MMCSS) is not running, even though its set to automatic. Trying to
restart it shows the following error message: "error 2: the system
cannot find the file specified". Because this service won't start, the
"Windows Audio" service can't start either.

The Event Log shows these error messages:

Event ID 7023: "The Multimedia Class Scheduler service terminated with
the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."

Event ID 7001: "The Windows Audio service depends on the Multimedia
Class Scheduler service which failed to start because of the following
error: The system cannot find the file specified." I wish I knew which
file the MMCSS service can't find!! No hints anywhere I can find.

I've tried Googling for answers, but haven't found any. Does someone
here have a clue as to what's going on here?

Thanks.

Sam

Re-install your audio drivers.
