Everything I do in Outlook is producing a dialogue box telling me that "the
messaging interface has returned an unknowm error. If the problem persists,
restart Outlook". I have restarted Outlook a dozen times and turned the
computer completely off too.
Calender will not save appointments, nor can I delete any reminders, they
just keep coming up forever! Cant enter or delete contacts either.
It may just be a coincedence, but I cant see the emoticons in my MSN but
apparently they can be seen by people I am chatting to.
I am not very computer literate, so any easy to follow advise would be
greatly appreciated.

Depends on your version of Outlook. Options are;
Help-> Detect and Repair
Help-> Office Diagnostic
Insert the CD, run setup and choose Repair
