I have an HP7310 which is on its last legs and I'm looking for a
replacement. FAX isn't absolutely necessary but I do find the
two-sided document feeder useful (or I did, it's one of the things
that's broken).

So, can anyone recommend a modern all-in-one that has a two-sided
document feeder so I can copy double-sided originals.

You can look at the newer versions. The 8500A Plus or 8600 Plus are
direct equivalents (the non-Plus are letter/A4-size scanner, Plus is
legal-size [not certain of metric equivalent], Premium adds the second
printer tray.) Several reviews have shown these still have some of the
lowest printing costs for an inkjet.

CNET likes the Epson Workforce 845. It's a bit cheaper, although the ADF
only holds 35 pages instead of 50. Also, being Epson, I believe the
heads are still non-replaceable, so you must change the ink when it says
so.

PS: My 7310 just died. It looks like the carriage connection to the
drive cable broke (the cable is still there, but doesn't move the
carriage.) So far, I haven't figured out how to get the thing
disassembled enough to see if I can fix it or not. The scanner still
works. I pulled out an old Deskjet 970 for printing (and US$70 for new
carts!!) until I fix it or get a new one.

Thanks, there seem to be two HP possibilities actually, the 8500
series that you suggest and the CQ521B (C410b) which is aimed more at
the SoHo market.

Any feedback on reliability etc. of these would be most welcome.

In my case, I was able to fix my 7310. I figured out how to get the lid
and scanner part off. I ended up having to super-glue the drive cable to
the carriage. The clamp had broken off.

I'm aiming to try and repair mine too, I'm just planning for possible
disaster! :-)
