All downloads to Desktop

When I download .exe files from the Internet, IE6 offers me the choice to either save to / or open the file.

But when I download any archive file, (.rar, .zip, .ace, .jar, etc.) they always download directly into my Temp Internet Files folder and automatically open in my zip program,(Winrar). No choice is offered on where I want it saved to .... or even
if I want to open it.

I want all my downloaded files ( zipped or unzipped ) to go directly to my desktop and no more. In Winrar I have set Desktop as the default folder for archives, temporary
files, and extracted files. I don't know if it's an IE6 issue or a Winrar issue but any help on this is appreciated. Many Thanks.

Instead of just clicking on the download link, have you tried right-clicking
on it & 'Save target as --"?

Yes that works but it's a pain. Often a link that is marked as "download" is actually just a link to another page, so what you end up saving is an .htm file. sometimes you may go thru 3 or 4 pages before you actually get to the download file, there's no way of knowing. I just want to set all my downloads on the desktop by normal double clicking, this must be possible in XP.

Folder Options> File Types.

Select a file type/file extension that is currently downloading
automatically and click Advanced.

On the next screen that appears, check the box next to "Confirm open after
download." Click OK.

Repeat for each file type/file extension.

Folder Options -> File Types -> choose extension -> Advanced -> Confirm
open after download (check this).

You may also add to registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions
new dword value "AlwaysPromptWhenDownload" = 1

In registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
add new string value "Download Directory" and place here path to your
download folder.

Just beware of cluttering up you desktop with large
files....it may be better to create a new folder
somewhere in your profile for all your downloads, then
creating a shortcut to that folder on your desktop. Big
difference between a bunch of 10Mb files on your desktop
and a 1k shortcut to those files on your desktop.
