Intermittent problem with a users computer. It used to happen "all the
time". About a month ago her machine had the SOE re-loaded on to it. The
problem happened again within the first week. Fast forward three weeks to
today and it has happened again. Very intermittent as you can see, but it
survived having the C: drive wiped and the SOE reloaded.
The basic problem is, all the background processes suddenly decide they want
to become foreground applications. i.e., everything that you would normally
see in the "Processes" tab in Task Manager is now in the "Applications" tab
alongside all other programs that were open.
It generally happens at the time an application is closed. This could be an
office application, telnet software, or in this most recent case when she
closed a Citrix session.
Reviewing event log, there is nothing in the system or application log for
35+ minutes prior to me getting to her machine so it's not explorer (or any
other app for that matter) crashing and doing odd things. The antivirus logs
(SAV CE 10.0.2.2021.2) show nothing. Full scans in normal & safe mode have
come up empty.
I would love to get some ideas and suggestions because right now I am at a
complete loss. I have the machine with me for the next few days so I can run
any and all tests on it that people come up with.
My searches on such a thing happening have all come up empty. Admittedly
that could simply be due to me using the wrong terminology to describe it.
The only things in my mind at the moment are some odd signals being sent to
the computer from the rather old keyboard plugged in to it (although I would
have thought such a weird result would also be accompanied by an error in the
event log even if it was the keyboard), or a badly written rootkit/piece of
malware.
