Thank you for contacting the Alienware Technical Support Team.

Unfortunately, we do not have the manuals for the sound card and video
card of your system. Actually, we do not provide our customers with
any manual except for the Desktop Owner Manual that come with all our
systems and that can be downloaded here:
http://aliendl.alienware.com/System_...ner_Manual.pdf.
Any additional information can be found in our "Knowledge Data Base"
at: http://support.alienware.com or you may also contact us by phone
at 866-287-6727 or by email and we will assist you in the matter.

If you have more questions regarding this or any other topic, do not
hesitate to contact us again.

Best regards,

I am so very surprised that Alienware does not support their systems
to the level of providing specific manuals for the motherboard, audio
and video solutions they provide. In fact, I would bet the computer
magazine publishers and other forums (including online) would be as
surprised as I am to hear about this!

Another reason to roll your own.

Why would that surprise you? If you build your own system and buy nothing
but premium "retail" versions of components, the only manual you will get
(likely) is a very thin manual for the motherboard, with not a lot of useful
information in it. If you buy a $300 video card for example, you will
likely get just a cd-rom for a "manual", which does you absolutely no
****ing good before the system is built, unless you have another complete
working system handy that you can read the manual with.

No computer magazine publisher would be surprised at all.

You are expecting alienware to pull some non-existent manuals out of their
ass, and you are surprised that they won't do that for you??? What this
boils down to is that you are expecting alienware to provide you with
something that they (alienware) never had to begin with. When alienware
builds, I guarantee you that they don't buy the RETAIL versions of
components, so they (alienware) don't even get the useless cd-rom "manual".

If you build your own, its best to choose components from major brands that
have GOOD web sites with extensive support download area available. As a
minimum, you will need to download all the latest drivers right before, or
during the build. Eventually, you might want to review the manual which you
should also be able to download from the web site. -Dave

Nice.

The motherboard in my unit is a seriously complicated component, with
all sorts of switches, ports, jumpers, headers and even a two digital
LED for POST codes. Alienware doesn't care for their clients to have
any documentation on it at all. I considered it strange since
Alienware has a reputation for catering to the tech savvy, those of us
who might like such a thing as detailed documentation. I am surprised
at the support they have gotten from the community despite this
obvious weakness. Oh, well, there are valid points on both sides of
this argument, as expected. Thanks for your opinion! TTYL!

Did Alienware by any chance include CD's for each of the major items?
This would be more typical than including the actual manuals since...

CD's take up less space
CD's can be put in a simple CD binder
All the information including drivers AND manuals would probably be on the
CD's.

Just asking...

I've found them to be less than helpful. I bought a machine from them
that suffered failure after failure and then they finally gave me the
finger when the warranty was over. Ethically, they should have started
the warranty when they delivered a working machine, but no... initial
date of shipment, even if it takes 8 months to deliver a working
machine. Biggest bunch of scumbags on the planet.

I don't believe that it took eight months.
If a credit card was used, the money could easily have been refunded.

Ummmm, I'm no fan of alienware, think that their stuff is overpriced
garbage. However, how do i put this nicely?

I don't believe alienware makes motherboards, though I COULD be wrong on
that.

Assuming alienware isn't manufacturing mainboards, then alienware is in the
same boat that you are. That is, if alienware wanted a mainboard manual,
they would likely go to the manufacturer's web site to download it.

The difference between you and alienware is that the builders at alienware
don't need the manual. Well after the first prototype that is. Even for
the first prototype i doubt they use it much.

It's not my intention to support alienware I just find it odd that someone
would expect a system builder to provide manuals that they (the system
builder) did not publish and likely never had anyway. That has nothing to
do with alienware.

Like I said before, if you build your own with nothing but retail
components, ummmm, WHAT manuals??? And if you use OEM parts like system
builders do, you get nothing but the box and the component usually. -Dave

What are the other, more satisfying ways to deal with such a situation-

Plan on assassinating Michael Dell or sticking a bomb up his ass?
