AIW 9800 Pro Cat and MMC recommendations

Hello,

I have Cat 5.1 and MMC 9.03 installed for my AIW 9800 Pro card. I have
not had any problems with this combination, yet these versions are
rather old.

I'm not interested in that bloated .NET just to make a couple
configuration changes once, so I would use ATI Tray Tools instead if
need be, although I don't have to now.

So I was wondering if there was any good reason to upgrade either one or
both?

I've read in there that ATI made some changes with regards to the AUX
input, anything else I should be cautious of?

Thanks.

Randy...

Good rule of thumb: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks for the reply. That is indeed a good rule and one I often follow.

I guess my concern was that so much time had passed that by now there
might be a good reason that I wasn't aware of.

The AUX input not being used anymore is appealing. Upgrading the Cat's
also comes upgrading the MMC. Perhaps that would be worth it if there
was better A/V sync. Don't know. Just wanted to see what other AIW 9800
Pro users were using these days.

But you are right, that is good advice.

Around Cat5.4 the audio went to digital on the bus. No analog connection to
the sound card is needed. This puts a delay into the sound/picture. Not a
problem for me. It seems to improve audio/video sync. It's a bitch though if
you want to play a game console through your AIW or have a regular TV nearby
on the same channel.
Can't think of any reason to go newer than 9.08 on an AIW. That's what I'm
using with Cat5.7. If you want to use Guide+ 9.06.1 would be the best. You
can probably use older WDM drivers to keep the analog sound but it may be a
PIA.
The Cat6.2 drivers have a WDM release with a Unified driver. I don't know if
this works with older versions of MMC.
It's a bit of a pain to go back to 9.03 but its not all that difficult. If
it doesn't work out.

Hi Randy,
If everything is working properly there's absolutely no reason to update

Along that line, I am using MMC 9.13 and my tv viewing on the computer
has become miserable with sort of a double sound echo, and the "unknown
AVSource 1" selection for the feed input now. Would like to drop back
to 9.08 but how do I uninstall just the MMC without messing up the video
drivers now.

You can uninstall MMC from Add/Remove Programs and not affect the video
drivers at all. It's totally separate. Then you can install the MMC of
your choice.

An essential rule of thumb so far as ATI cards are concerned. In 20 years
I've never had so much trouble with software as I have with that for ATI AIW
cards. Fortunately I no longer use an ATI card in my games machine so I
don't have to keep up-to-date with drivers for each new game that I get, so
I just run with an old Catalyst and an old MMC, and have a known-working
backup.

Not all MMC versions are compatible with all Catalyst versions, and vice
versa. It's best to read the install notes of the MMC release.
