I scrubbed a nasty malware (malwarebytes) program off today called Fakienit
and afterwards I found I cannot connect to the web usin XP home SP-3.
I did all the typical troubleshooting, removed and updated drivers, changed
cables, changed ethernet ports on router and computer (MB has 2), reset
winsock, surfed the web for answers for 5 hours and I am still webless on my
desktop. I might as well add the connections are enabled as well before
someone suggests that.
So here I am, the first forum I choose. What else can I do? I feel its in
the registry, somthing somehwere is amiss, or scrambled. I spoke with 3 IT
folks from my ISP provider, all havin various levels of knowledge, but to no
avail.
When I reconnect the cable to my computer, my AV gives me the option if
either "Home" or "Public", but the connection still has a real big red "X"
over it. Device manager claims no issues as well. I laso noticed the router
port blinks at a high rep when plugged in, and there is a light nar my
ehternet port on my MB that also bliks at a high rep rate, its the same no
matter what port I plug into.
I also see others have had the same issues on the web doing "network cable
unplugged" search on google, and no one has a corrective action.
IS there anone one here with a supreme knowlege on how I may fix it?
Is a custom build with top of the line components and I use it for photo
work.
Yhank you

Not sure this will help, but it's worth a try... Try the programs
"LSPFix" and "WinSockXPFix". Sometimes they will solve obscure
problems, particularly if caused as a result of Malware removal.

LSPFix:

WinsockXPFix:

HTH,
John

I may be late in responding to the post, however regarding "...I did all the
typical troubleshooting,..." - you did run ipconfig /all - result?.

The "old Network cable..." is a generic error messasge generated when the
Windows diagnostic utilities cannot resolve the problem.

* Media State Disconnected
* Ethernet Cable ubplugged

I have had the same problem and spent days scouring Google and trying any
suggestion that I could find. Last night I found a post from 2002. It seemed
ridiculous but I gave it a shot. PROBLEM SOLVED.

1.) Shut dowm your PC.
2.) Unplug the power cord.
3.) If you have a laptop, remove the battery as well.
4.) Walk away from the problem for at least 30 minutes.
5.) When you return, reconnect battery and power cord.
5.) Start as usual.
6.) If this solves the problem, take 20 minutes and post this to all of
those message boards that you didn't find the solution to.

This fix appears to work for any OS/MOBO/NIC.

What causes it? I don't know.

Have a great day!
