the repair function , which took the pc back to sp2 iex 6 , i
had the option of enabling ahci in the bios i had installed
under -ide- .. the 2 hard drives are sata drives

looking on the web, there seems to be a lot of posts on this
subject of enabling, post install .. anyone have a pointer as to is
it worth doing / good way to do it ?

Xp doesn't support AHCI for SATA drives Vista and Windows 7 does.

So, why are there AHCI drivers for XP?

Actually XP does support AHCI. Just because Vista and windows 7 have the
drivers on their DVD's, it doesnt mean XP doesnt support it. You HAVE to
slipstream SATA drivers to an XP cd. if you want to use AHCI.

I've done it here with an XP SP3 CD I've slipstreamed SATA drivers with.

Works fine. Or download SATA drivers extract them to a floppy. Then
press F6 during the install to install them.

OK .... I have see referance to that on the web ...

BUT .. now that I have xp-pro with service pack - 3
installed ..have I missed the boat ..or is there a 'simple' way
to install the driver ... post install .... One was was to use
the hardware / driver option in the control panel and change the
primary IDE to sata .. close .. change the bios and re-boot ...

Tried that but ended up wiuth a yellow dot against the driver ..
used the roll back to reverse the action

assume you need to down load the driver from the mother board
web site ?

tnx - G ..

Sorry, I meant natively, Xp needs special drivers to support SATA and AHCI
My motherboard supports AHCI, not Xp however without special drivers, not
supplied by Microsoft.

You need to find out what the chipset on your system is first. In my
case for this system, its ICH10R. You can either download the sata
drivers from the mobo maker's site. Or from Intel, if theyre Intel SATA
drivers

Whats the brand / model of your mobo / what chipset has it got?

One of these MAY work if you've got an Intel chipset

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...&DwnldID=15251

You need to extract the zip file and put all of the files on a floppy
(or USB flash drive), BUT, the XP install may not detect a USB flash drive

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...&DwnldID=15251

When you see F6 during the install, press F6 and put the floppy in

If you've got an Intel chipset, these maybe the drivers. If your chipset
is listed

Thanks

The MB is a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P ......ICH10R from the
handbook

The F6 option during install ... dose this mean I have to re
run the windows recovery part of the install again .. and
revert back to the service pack 2 level of my install cd ??

Or can I load these drivers without going back to square
one ...... ??

Tnx - G .

You can reduce the number of questions about your configuration:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste
the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to
be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted
information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.
