Hello

I've an AGP 4x graphics card (HP Pavilion t160.uk desktop pc). If I get an
AGP 8x card because its cheaper would it be backward compatible in my system
?

Same the AGP is version 2 in my system, so would version3 be backward
compatible?

Synapse Syndrome if you are reading this an nvidia 7600 AGP was suggested to
me which retails for just over £50 here in the UK. I've found XFX GeForce
7950GT 512 MB GDDR3 DVI HDTV out AGP Graphics card - would this be
compatible and work in my system. Is it worth my while to go for it ? My
PC is around four years old - HP Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz cpu, 1GB RAM.

No, you can't count on backwards compatibility between AGP versions since
newer AGP versions changed the voltage the card requires. Some motherboards
will handle this gracefully, others will simply burn up your AGP card.

I'm surprised that you found one that is only 8x, usually it states "8x/4x".

Regardless of the card's actual capabilities, it may not be properly
documented.

There is some invaluable information on AGP compatibiliity on this webpage
http://www.playtool.com/pages/agpcompat/agp.html

It explains the signalling voltages and the different AGP slot types. There
is also links so you can look specifically at your own hardware to find if it
is compatible.
