Aggravating "auto" change

I am new to WORD 2002, and cannot figure out how to stop an aggravating
feature. If I am working on a document, I may want to BOLD or to change
font size on a particular line, heading, etc. When I select the item
(heading, sentence, whatever) and hit BOLD or font-size change . . . the
WHOLE document changes to what I only want on the selected part.

How do I stop WORD 2002 from doing that (WORD 97 didn't do this!). By the
way, sometimes, WORD 2002 doesn't do this, but most of the time, it does.

Thanks in advance for the answer or advice.

Chuck

It sounds like the underlying style is set to automatically update. Choose
Format - Styles and Formatting. In the Styles and Formatting task pane,
right-click the style being used and choose Modify. In the Modify Style
dialog box, click to remove the check next to Automatically update.

And check the "Add to template" box to make sure this change is written back
to Normal.dot.
