I notice now that I when I
retrieve new posts using this same agent news reader that I used on my
old computer, it takes longer to retrieve the list of available posts.
It then retrieves the posts themselves quickly. I don't remember my
other computer taking so long to retrieve the lists. Should I change
some settings under the options/preferences menu?

If by agent you mean Forte Agent's new reader, have a look at the FAQ
