age of empires help needed

got a problem with aoe2, installed game no problem but as i go to launch the
game it tells me that its initialising and then goes no further! it then
forgets what im asking it to do and returns to normal start up icon . have
also installed aoe3 which starts no problem >can anyone tell me why this is
happening and how i can fix it please,
