Help. A buddy I play AoE2 with had his dad over for a week, and suddenly we can no longer connect on multiplayer games of AoE2. My buddy has no idea what his dad did to his computer, but so far he has tried messing with firewalls with no luck. He has Windows XP and uses an actiontec GT 701WG DSL modem. He restored to an earlier point (prior to his dad's arrival,) and no luck. HELP!!!

Age of Empires 2 I believe uses the following ports:

Allow an initial outbound TCP connection on port 47624.
Allow subsequent inbound and outbound connections on TCP and UDP ports
2300-2400.

Are you using the ICF or another firewall?

How can I activate a port? Is there a software or something?

I'm presuming you mean open or forward a port. It depends how your PC is
networked.

Are you connected to a router/NAT or is the modem simply plugged into your
machine?

If you're behind a router/NAT, then you'll need to go to it's own config, as
it will need to be told where to forward the traffic.

If you're using a modem directly into your PC, then it should be an option
in your software firewall to allow ports to be opened etc.

Hi Pieter,

Let's try some basic troubleshooting. If the problem still persists
please post back and we'll try some more steps. Good luck! :-)

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com Some games
require a patch: http://www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

5. Update DirectX and your Chipset, Sound, &Video Drivers:
For all Video / DirectX / Game and Hardware Issues, I have a
Checklist of Solutions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html
