I bought Age of Empires 2 some years ago and played it on Windows 98 without any problems

This week I installed the game on Windows XP. The installation didn't cause any problem. If I try to start the game it starts with a smaller resolution (I suppose 640x480 or something like this) - I have 1024x768. Until the video from the chess playing men everything is alright but the resolution

Then after that video there's just a black screen that won't change. I always have to close "empires2.exe" with the Task Manager to be able to work again on my PC without restarting

I have also installed the new DirectX and Chipset, Sound, and Video Drivers. But it still isn't working

What can I do about this? I like the game very much and like to play it again.

I think the videos do play in 640x480 resolution from memory.

Has the program actually locked up? Not responding in the task manager, or
is it just sat there? May be it's forced your monitor into an unsupported
rate?

Also grab the latest patch from
http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/age2.aspx#downloads.

The "empires2.exe" in the Task Manager looks quite normal. But I can just start the Task Manager, I can't do anything else. The computer is like frozen up. After I've closen "empires2.exe" the computer works normally again

I also have installed the Game Patch Version 2.0a. I don't know whether the monitor is forced into an unsupported rate. Note that the speakers don't play the main menu music from AOE 2.
