After installing XP SP2, IE is very slow to display web pages, even google
takes a long time.

I turned off XP's firewall and IE worked fine. Then I turned the FW back on
and IE was slow again.

I found many people have this problem but I cannot find a solution. Any
suggestions.

Thanks....paul

Leave the SP2 FW off, and install the free firewall program below. It works
very well, and does not cause the problems caused by the SP2 FW.

Zone Alarm - Free

or

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

OK, I will use ZA.

Do I have to uninstall XP's firewall or just turn it off before I install
ZA. How do I uninstall XP's firewall if that is needed.

Is MS working on a fix for their XP firewall?

thanks....paul

Hi Paul :-)

Here is some information on the two firewalls, and why it would be best to
use the ZA:

1. Windows firewall only blocks incoming packets. This means trojans can sit
on your windows box and phone home with total immunity.
2. Zone Alarm has pretty much always been a real firewall, it blocks
incoming and outgoing packets by default.
3. Windows XP firewall does not block remote access by default. This is sort
of like openly inviting hackers and zombie pc network operators in through
your front door.
4. Zone Alarm did not need to be told that you need to block outgoing
traffic.

To turn the XP Firewall off:

HOW TO: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps
