After XP sp2, IE6 won't work on first open

Just upgraded to XP sp2. During boot process I connect to my DSL.

Now every first time I open IE after boot, always get page not found,
no matter what site I try to go to.
I know that I'm connected to the internet by my DSL icon in system tray
and that I can use Outlook Express to check for messages.

I close IE, re-open it and all works fine from that point on until I
shutdown
and start again, and on first open of IE it doesn't work again.

This is strange.
Ideas anyone ?
Thanks Frank

Just a comment that before I installed SP2, HP required me to download a ton
of stuff first, or else everything would be screwed up. Maybe your computer
manufacturer has things for you to do as well???

Well Dell didn't have anything that applied to mine and one from my ISP
didn't
apply either.
I think that if I'm missing some update, the problem would always be there.
But like I said, its only on the first open of IE after boot up.

Anyone else have any ideas.

Doublecheck your settings at IE Tools>Internet Options>Connections.

As OE seems not to be affected and it uses the same connection settings as
IE, it sounds like "hijackware" may be your problem. While you may not have
been having a problem before installing SP2, it's doubtful SP2 "caused" your
problem. Instead, the install of SP2 may have *exposed* the hijackware by
disabling it, hence your inability to connect the first time. Check your
system for "hijackware":

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also:

1. Download and run Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/); then...

2. Update your virus definitions, enable Show Hidden Files
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02092715262339)
and then run a full system scan in Safe Mode
(http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01052409420406)
with nothing else running in background. Note the files identified and
removed then find the corresponding page for the file at your AV maker's
online support pages (e.g.,
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...favorites.html)
and follow all Removal steps.

WinXP Only (WinME similar): If this scan finds anything, create a new
Restore Point then Disk Cleanup > More options > Delete all but the most
recent Restore Point.

3. Check in at Windows Update.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

Thanks for the response
I have done the following items.
#1 did not find anything
# 2 & 3 found cookies and few minor things. All fixed
I have run Hijack This and posted to the other forum and am waiting for an
answer.

Do you really think I have a hijack problem ?

Thanks Frank
