Can you post the ipconfig /all output in your next message?
Download this updates and apply it to your machine and boot up your machine.
Description of the Wireless Client Update for Windows XP with Service Pack 2

Open your Wireless Connection and check the settings. Make sure the Laptop
getting an Auto IP address and also connected to the right SSID Network and
not trying to connect to next door wireless!
Does your wireless secured with an encryption method (WEP/WPA)?
Do you use the Laptop/wireless manufacturer wireless utility to manage your
wireless connection or you are using WZC (Windows Zero Configuration)?
Again, you failed to mention what Operating system you are using and what
the Laptop specs and model.
BTW Did you tried to repair the winsock by running these commands:
ipconfig /flushdns Click [OK]
ipconfig /renew click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot your Laptop and try the connection
Did you run a thorough scan after doing a restore from the backup?
