After reading mail, if I delete the message, the next message in line opens.
I do not like this behavior. In Outlook Express I had the option to return
to the inbox and select whatever message I wanted to open next. I cannot
find that option in Windows Mail. Does it exist, if so, where.

No, that option does not exist in WM. Are you opening messages
in a separate window rather than using the preview pane? You will
have to close the message and delete it from the message list pane.
