Rob,
I'm still debugging my original posted problem. But so
far this is what has worked for me:
1.) Uninstall the last applications you installed
(for example, Doom 3's version of DirectX).
2.) Uninstall SP2.
3.) Uninstall PestPatrol or any other automatic cookie and
pop-up blocker that has tried to fill in the gap
in Microsoft's technology prior to SP2.
4.) You should now find that IE 6.0 is working again.
5.) Next, disable and uninstall older than 2004 Norton
AntiVirus and Norton Systemworks.
6.) Disable Norton Firewall and reinstall SP2.
Windows Update currently claims its too overloaded to
install during normal work hours this week, so try it
tonight or in the early hours of the AM.
7.) Install the 2004 version of Norton AntiVirus
(and Norton Systemworks if using this) and then
run LiveUpdate TWICE to get the Norton WMI (Windows
Management Update), which allows SP2 to recognize
the Norton firewall and the Norton anti-virus protection.
Fortunately, Norton is offering a $0 upgrade of
both pieces of software if you buy at Fry's before
Thursday (9/2/2004).
8.) Get the latest DirectX security update from
Windows Update (not part of SP2).
9.) Reinstall PestPatrol, if desired.
10.) Reinstall Doom 3, but not the DirectX component,
if desired.
11.) Reinstall any other applications you had previously
removed.
