You might need to R.click my computer, properties, updates, select the
auto update mode.For now,install xp cd,boot to xp cd,recovery,select 1
for C: Press enter key for password, type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru
(15-20 min),type:EXIT Let xp start up,remove cd.

do you even get to some stable screen or does the computer just restart
after showing a blue screen for a second or two. if its the second
case, then you might want to boot with your windows cd and try to run
chkdsk or you can fix the boot sector as it might be corrupted.

use your windows cd to boot and get to the screen where you are asked
if you would li ke to recover , new installation. choose the recovery
console. use the command "fixboot" from there on. did you have many
partitions on your HD? or just one single. you could also run "fibmbr".

You could get some information by following links. goodluck

jenny:
I can't seem to find your original query in which you detailed the problem
you're having which apparently centers about a "failure to boot" situation,
so I probably shouldn't even be intruding at this point. But be that as it
may, I'm going to do so...

Might it be better if you perform a Repair install of the XP operating
system rather than go through these Recovery Console machinations? From the
little I've been able to glean from this thread I'm wondering whether that
would be the best course of action for you at this point. Admittedly I could
be dead wrong because I don't have any information as to your *precise*
problem, how it arose, knowledge of your system, what steps you've already
taken to overcome the problem and general background info.

So if this is "off the wall" please ignore...
Anna
