after a ftp put command it just says "200 PORT command successful." and
hangs forever. What could be wrong? when i test the ftp server using IE in
"passive" mode it works fine. but ftp at command line hangs on "200 PORT
command successful." after i enter put <file name>

The FTP Server probably will not do Active FTP,...or the Firewall device you
are behind has problems with it. I have heard that some Linksys boxes won't
handle the PORT operation properly.

You probably need to try Passive FTP,...Passive does not use PORT,...it uses
PASV.
