This may not mean anything to those who are younger than middle-aged, but I'd
like some advice about one of the screensavers that Berkeley's After Dark
produced. I had a Mac in those days (don't now) and I could sit for ages
mesmerized by Nirvana, which generated a vast range of psychedelic patterns
on my computer screen. It's no longer available, even for the Mac, but I'd
love to get hold of the equivalent for XP.

Is anyone familiar with this Nirvana screensaver? If not, can someone
suggest perhaps another (reputable) forum where I might have more luck?

These are very nice. I've installed them all and have been using them for
ages sans problems.

My video card is too old to be able to use those, I'm afraid, Doug. They are
spectacular, but the FAQ page says I need an accelerated OpenGL card which
I'm sure I don't because they're running very jerky. Thanks for the
suggestion, though.

It's true...the advent of the OpenGL cards and OpenGL screensavers did do
in the Berkeley AfterDark screensavers.

The After Dark screensavers were notoriously buggy. I don't know about
Nirvana, but you can get the flying toasters for both Mac and Windows here:

The Windows version isn't as cool as the Mac version, but there you

After dark screen savers were always a problem in the past. Dont know
about current conditions tho. However, we used to fix lots of PCs just
by removing after dark on win9X PCs.

IIRC, it took some tinkering to come up with the right combination of
video card and sound card for Windows 9X. AfterDark wasn't so much a
problem with Windows 3.X. I figured that the introduction of plug-n-
play in Windows 9X and dynamic configuration must have played random
havoc with the hardware resources that were needed by AfterDark. OTOH,
I had no problems with programmable sound cards, especially, for Win9X
and AfterDark.

Then you were luck, as After Dark was a MAJOR problem with win3.X
