I have been using my 3170 for a few weeks now, and considering the price
this unit retails for I am very impressed with it.

One question I have (as a relative newbie to scanning) is that I keep
hearing people mention Silverfast and VueScan software. As I understand it
this is 3rd party scanning software. Are there any great advantages to
using either of these software packages over the supplied Epson software?
If so, what are they? Does someone know of a course resource to read up on
either of these packages?

I wish there was a single PDF for it that one could download and read.
