Hi,
I know most of you guys probably have built your own Pc's, and some may even feel sorry for those of us who don't feel compeent enough to build.... so we fall back on buying.

But hopefully you can offer me some advice.

I am looking for a desktop that I can run adobe photoshop with a
number of large files open on, convert music cd into
mp3, have some large word documents open, and search
internet all running at same time.

From what I see, the fastest chips are the Quadcore,
and some new ones running at 3.0 Ghz Current ones in
affordable desktops are Q6600 chip, but only gives a
speed of 2.4 and 1066 FSB.

Two machines I am looking at are
Philips HEPC 7501/05 which is 2.66 Ghz, and 1333 FSB
(but DUO core)

HP Pavilion M9070 which is 2.4 Ghz, and only 1088 Ghz

Any advice, or can you advice who could help me on
this one?

Also wondering whether to go with Vista or try to get
supplier to provide with XP.

Do you want to get a PC from a highstreet shop, or would you buy online and get it delivered?

A few members have recently bought things from NovaTech and been pleased, so it may be worth a look there for something cheaper.

For what you are after, I'd strongly recommend the Q6600 - and if you bought it with a good motherboard you should be able to overclock it no problem to 3Ghz. (I've done that myself, along with a couple of others here).

I'd suggest getting Vista unless you have a good reason not to get it, quite simply as it's going to become standard fairly soon and applications may end up requiring it. There's no point in having to buy it again a couple of years down the line.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I had not considered whether i would buy from highstreet shop or online purchase. I guess if the spec and price were significantly better, i would buy online. Otherwise prefer the feeling of being able to walk back into the store if a problem arises.

I don't think i would tackle the overclocking myself, but i guess i could find an overclocker enthusiast who could do it for me.

Can you explain why you would recommend the Quad Q6600 (which runs at only 2.4 Gh with a FSB of only 1088) over the Duo E6750 (which runs at 2.66 with a FSB of 1333)

Is the FSB a significant factor, when i have many applications all running at the one time?

Do you have a gut feeling when high street shops may offer a desktop with the newer QX9650 ? If i waited until March 2008, would such desktops likely be available?

Does anybody have a gut feeling when a desktop with a Quad QX9650 be released?

If i wait until March 2008, would this likely to be available?

And can anybody explain how a FSB of 1066 would be likely to cause a bottle neck and slow performance if running many applications at the one time.

Is it worth holding out for a desktop with FSB 1333 ?

The only Quad i can find at Overclcokers is the Q6600 which is only 2.4 Gh before overclocking with a FSB of 1066

The best spec desktop i have seen in a review is the Arbico Elite 8800GT SLI power desktop PC

This is a Quad core running at 3.0 before overclocking.

I am going to inquire if they will supply overclocked and with XP Pro instead of Vista.

E6850 is dual core processor, if it were a QX6850 or a QX9650 it would be a 3Ghz Quad core
