look at Task Manager and see what programs are hogging the cpu.

Windows XP SP3
My computer was going extremely slow and begining to become un useable. I
read some of the replies to similar problems so I uninstalled the Norton
Security, downloaded AVG anti-virus and anti spyware from Windows.
I turned the computer off then on again the next day and it worked with no
problems for an hour then the extreme slowness returned. What else can be
causing it?
